Paper Power

posted under Personal on 02 Jul 2009

So instead of talking about design, I now direct my attention to something more important, something that will affect us if we don’t do something about it. The environment - we tend to take so much for granted but if we continue to use all its resources without giving anything back we are sure to land ourselves in a very uncomfortable place. Paper Power is an intiative my boyfriend Dori started - where we collect white paper and take it to be recycled and donate the money collected to charity.

I believe its now time to extend this initiative to people around SA and around the world. I know that many countries do separate their trash but we don’t do that here which is a big problem. All we are asking you to do is keep your white paper separate from the rest of your trash, we can either collect it from you (if you’re in JHB) or you can take it to be recycled yourself and donate the money to any charity you pick. I’m in the process of desiging a site where we can then enter in the details of the charities donated to and the amount donated. If anyone has any ideas or wants to share what they donated please submit it through the comment form and I will put it on the site for everyone to see. I think with everything going on with the economic situation and just generally, people are disheartened so this is a way to lift your spirits by giving something back without really having to do any work.

Some tips:

If you work in an office which has a photocopier machine/printer place a box there for people to throw there waste paper into instead of throwing it in the bin by their desk. All it takes for one person in the office to put a box there and ask everyone to use it, this simple gesture will help many charities to afford what they need to keep their doors open. I have seen adverts on TV to say Puppy and Kitty Haven are battling to keep there doors open and so this month we would like to donate as much as possible to help them.
